Detailed Programme

WORKSHOP A: How to Make You and Your Services More Visible – a Workshop in Marketing the Library’s Resources (in English)

Session coordinator: Linda Vidlund, Uppsala University Library, Sweden

Time and venue: May 26, 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Praha 1, Narodni 3, 2nd floor, room no. 206

This workshop will be led by Linda Vidlund and Cecilia Petersson.

Over a short amount of time the libraries have increased their e-resources and digital collections. This gives new opportunities to provide accessibility to the end-users. We still experience that the library room is a central point for the academic experience for the students. The physical library room has a lot of potential. We are moving from the feeling of storage for books to create a different kind of experience within the collection. How and in what ways can we promote our e-resources in the physical space?

Welcome to this workshop where we try out different tools, ideas and strategies on how to market the library’s resources in new ways. You will get an introduction to the topic mixed with some practical examples. We will share both our mistakes and successes from previous experiences. Our workshop includes both discussions and sharing in groups. We will also have “hands on” exercises. After the workshop you will have some new tools, good examples and tried out new things with your mobile device.

Huddersfield were one of the first libraries in Europe to go out to tender for a discovery service and implemented Summon in 2009.

The workshop will cover some of the following topics:

  • What benefits can a discovery service bring to your library?
  • What do you need to consider before buying one?
  • What issues to you need to be aware of during the implementation and what are the common pitfalls?
  • How to market your new discovery service to academics, research, students …and librarians!
  • What impact does a discovery service have on Information Literacy and on e-resource usage?

Above all, Helle and Dave are keen to emphasise the important benefits in user experience that a well implemented discovery service can deliver.
