Abstract
ResourceSync is a brand new framework for synchronization of resources (images, web pages, various data, …) on the Internet. It works on URI basis and allows synchronizing any resource independently on their type and the frequency of changes. ResourceSync is fully modular system and allows users to build up the synchronization process according to their needs. ResourceSync is intended to be a successor to the OAI-PMH and OAI-ORE protocols following their basic concepts and avoiding their weaknesses. ResourceSync features resource versioning, incremental synchronization, mirroring etc. It also brings up a completely new system of checking for changes – the old busy-waiting concept is replaced by a new system of notifications and announcements. Technically, the ResourceSync framework is based on well-known and wide-spread internet technologies (HTTP, Sitemap, Siteindex, …). ResourceSync framework is developed by the working group around Herbert van de Sompel and Carl Lagoze. Nowadays, the beta draft of the framework is available and opened for public comments. The aim of this paper is introduction of the ResourceSync framework, description of its most important features and the general philosophy and make a comparison to OAI-PMH and OAI-ORE protocols.
