Project of Digitization and Storage in the Zlín Region - Expirience, Insights

Abstract
In the years 2010–2013, the Zlín Region implemented a project of digitization and storage in a broader framework of sub-project Development of e-Government in the Zlín Region. The project was supported by the Integrated Operational Programme. It was one of the first so-called regional digitization projects and there was approximately half a million pages of library documents and museum collections digitized. It was a collection of memory institutions established by the Zlín Region, specifically regional library, regional art gallery, four regional museums and planetarium. The project focused on digitization in the form of service, not the building of the regional digitizing unit. This paper focuses on library aspects of the project such as a selection of documents, creation and sharing metadata, acquisition and allocation of identifiers, etc. All of these areas represent a seemingly marginal, but in the actual course of the project important and significant moments that may complicate the workflow. Related to the issue of the presented project is of course the issue of data presentation, access and long term preservation (LTP). In this regard, there will be a number of future options described – as viewed from the library and museums prespective. In this area, the Zlín Region intends to implement a follow-up project plan.
Author's professional CV
Ing. Jan Kanka since 1997 in the Regional Library Frantisek Bartos in Zlín. Until 2005 he worked in the department for adult readers in the social sciences section, in the years 2005 to 2008 he was head of bibliography and information services. Since 2012, he is head of the professional activities section of the library and works as a systems librarian. He also manages the website of the library, which was several times awarded first place for best online library presentation contest (Biblioweb). He publishes in the field of bibliography and ICT in librarianship.
