Detailed Programme

WORKSHOP A: Making Sense of eBooks: Navigating Models of Access and Ownership (in English)

Session coordinator: Michael Levine-Clark, University of Denver Libraries, United States

Time and venue: May 25, 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM, CERGE-EI, Prague 1, Politickych veznu 7, 2nd floor, room No. 7

This workshop will be led by Michael Levine-Clark.

Demand-driven acquisition. Evidence-based selection. Subscriptions. Perpetual access. Short-term loans. Packages. Title-by-title. Publisher platforms. Aggregators. Single-user. Multiple-user. Librarians are faced with a dizzying array of choices about how to provide e-books to their communities. There are multiple e-book models and a wide range of providers to work with, none of which will provide access to every e-book. Which is right for your library and for your patrons? How do you select the right e-book models? When does it make sense to work with multiple vendors and how can that be done as efficiently as possible? Acquiring e-books is an exercise in compromises – about efficiency, digital rights management, choice of titles, cost, and user experience – and librarians need to understand their choices in order to provide their users with the e-books they need.

This workshop will provide an in-depth overview of the multiple models, examining the pros and cons of each, and allowing librarians to better determine the right mix for their own institution. Attendees at this session will gain a deeper understanding of how the various e-book models function and which provide the most value in terms of long-term stability, ease of access, staff time, choice and flexibility, cost, and usage.

WORKSHOP B: The Ever-Changing World of Web Search (in English)

Session coordinator: Marydee Ojala, Online Searcher, United States

Time and venue: May 25, 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Praha 1, Narodni 3, 2nd floor, room no. 205

This workshop will be led by Marydee Ojala.

What's new with web search engines? Many things in our information world are static. Search isn't one of them. Search engine companies change strategies, alter (or eliminate) functionality, move items around on their sites, and provide different answers to the same search strategy seemingly on a whim. Clearly, Google dominates web search in most countries and its decisions about search technologies and techniques affect the attitudes, behaviors and expectations of searchers. It is not the only search engine, however, and information professionals need to know about the many other possibilities to stay ahead of their users and demonstrate their professionalism.

This workshop, given by an experienced searcher, information industry observer and author, looks at the latest developments in web search, up and coming alternative search engines, advanced search techniques, non-textual search, and individual search engine databases. It examines the growing reliance of graph search, knowledge entities and semantic connections and asks whether keyword searches will fade in importance going forward. Tips for power searchers enhance information professionals' use of web search tools.
