Summon 2.0 – The new generation of Discovery

These enhancements to the Summon service are based on everything we’ve learned about discovery over the last 4 years while serving as the digital front door for some of the largest and most respected research libraries in the world. We’ve performed ongoing usability studies, listened carefully to our customers and analyzed volumes of data including search logs of millions of users performing hundreds of millions of searches across the Summon unified index. The result is we’ve learned a lot about how users do research and we will present an overview of our new enhancements.
Aaron Maierhofer (Serials Solutions Specialist)

ThULB Search. A discovery system for the Thuringian University and State Library Jena (Germany)

Since 2012 the Thuringian University and State Library of Jena (ThULB) offers a discovery service which allows users a Google like experience. „ThULB Search“ was implemented on the basis of the unified Summon index in combination with the portal software VuFind in order to offer users a single point of entry. This session discusses the different possibilities in setting up a discovery service. It summarizes the experiences of the ThULB Jena and draws first conclusions.
Thomas Mutschler (Thuringian University- and State Library of Jena)

Experiences on implementing Summon® in Czech Republic

Discovery service Summon® is currently available at three institutions in Czech Republic – National Technical Library, University of Econimics in Prague and Czech Technical University in Prague. This session covers experiences with Summon® implementation at those three institutions.
Tomáš Soukup (Albertina icome Praha)

Increasing your Print usage with ProQuest Ebrary and Syndetics in Summon

Syndetics gives libraries more than 40 million unique, descriptive data elements relating to books, audio books, videos, CDs, and DVDs, which deliver richer, more informative results and create a significantly better catalog search experience. In addition with Summon’s highly sophisticated Match&Merge Technology your OPAC data is enriched with Summon full text from eBooks such as HathiTrust, Ebrary and more. This session demonstrate how this powerful combination of ProQuest services can increase your print usage.
Krzysztof Murawski (ProQuest) and Aaron Maierhofer (Serials Solutions Specialist)

WORKSHOP B: “An Idea Whose Time Has Come”: The Future of eBooks (in English)

Session coordinator: Seth Cayley, Gale Cengage Learning, United Kingdom

Time and venue: May 20, 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM, CERGE-EI, Prague 1, Politickych veznu 7, 2nd floor, room No. 7

Electronic books are older than the web, but they are finally achieving widespread acceptance. In January, the world’s largest bookseller reported that eBook sales were up by 70% in 2012. Clearly they are here to stay. But do eBooks change everything, or are they just the same as the print book in a different format? What opportunities do they present? What enhancements can we expect as the technology matures? How are publishers going to take advantage of the medium? Digital versions of print books are merely the first step in a major transformation of how we tell stories and provide education to learners of all ages. As a publisher who is passionate about teaching, learning and research, Seth shares his perspective on what is happening now in the world of eBooks and projections for what we can expect in the future.
