Abstract: |
The extremely dynamic process of connecting libraries to the Internet is
underway in connection with the introduction of information technology to all spheres of human activity, as well as the
creation and opening up of new services based on such technology. Thanks to the Internet, libraries have gained access
to a wide range of information sources. The continuation of the tradition of printed stock and the techniques of library
work is also very important. Libraries have become natural, multifunctional “information centres”. Act No.
106/1999 Coll. on Free Access to Information and Act No. 257/2001 Coll., the Library Act, imposes on libraries that
they make information from the field of public administration and self-government accessible. The fact that public
libraries are currently in the process of creating a more extensive network of institutions to offer the general
public access to the Internet, that these are institutions that know how to work with documents and their contents,
and that they have close links to the bodies of public administration brings new challenges and possibilities for
libraries in the sphere of making information from this area accessible.
The intent of the paper is to assess current endeavours in terms of making information concerning public
administration and self-government accessible at the Regional Research Library in Liberec. In addition, it plans to
sketch out a vision for the future, the methods of user support in ICT work, and the possibilities of cooperating
with other libraries and with the bodies of public administration and self-government. |
