DDS and Digital Libraries: Change of One Paradigma

Abstract

Document delivery services (DDS) are, after the long tradition (mentioned is the VINITI service 50 years ago), the integrated part of on-line information industry. Today they are organized by libraries which are in ownership of user’s institutions, as traditional ILL. Creation of on-line electronic (digital) libraries by publishers and big booksellers is opening the direct way for end user from his PC at his office or at his home to literature he needs. This process implicate the new paradigma of the role of the special, research, and academic libraries and also for their staff.

About the author

Associated professor at Institute of Information and Library Studies of Charles University in Prague, Institute of Bohemistic and Librarianship of the Silesian University Opava, and The Private University of Karlovy Vary. More then twenty years worked as the project manager and also the scientific consultant in the Central Institute of Scientific, Technical and Economic Information of Czechoslovakia (later Czech Republic). Participated in the FID and in the Czech Association of Librarians and Information professional activities. Today workes as the vice chairman of the Czech Information Society. Published more than 200 studies, articles and 8 books in the field of information system development, information policy and education in information professions.
