Abstract: |
The problems of the present Internet and some proposed solutions The aim of the
study is to show the problems of actual searching and researching on the Internet. The study is based the differences
between classical information retrieval and searching on the Internet. The goal is to answer the following questions:
- what are people trying to find on the Internet and what services are offered by the individual search tools,
- what do users expect from the search tools and what is their search behaviour,
- what are the necessary improvements for more effective searching in internet,
- how do the latest research and trends provide answers to these problems.
The individual problems are analysed on the basis of a model of information retrieval on the Internet and its
procedures. We utilise also the analysis of the results from a survey conducted by the author on Internet usage. The
focus of the survey was the degree of the user satisfaction with the search tools on the Internet. There were 1676
respondents who participated in the survey. There were 40 questions.

Associate Professor Soňa Makulová, PhD., is Associate Professor at the
Department of Library and Information Science at the Faculty of Arts, Comenius University. She specializes in
theoretical and methodological aspects of the implementation of the new information technology in library and
information systems, information retrieval in global information networks, external information resources and
multimedia. She is information specialist in the company Easy Learning and Teaching, the leading company in Slovakia in
the field of electronic publishing, multimedia and WWW design. She had written 6 monographs (Library Automation,
Guide to Internet, Internet in the Management and Business of your Company, Guide to Internet or Internet from A to Z,
Internet into your Packet, Searching and Researching in Internet), 2 textbooks (Databases, Introduction to Modern
Information technology) and more than 100 articles and reviews published in Slovakia and abroad. She was the member of
the EUCLID board (European Association for Library & information Education and Research) for 8 years.
She had more than 50 lectures at the conferences at home and abroad and is in the organising commitee and professional
guarantee of many international conferences (CS Online and Internet in the Management and Business of your company,
Slovakia and Internet in 2002). She is the founding member of Slovak Multimedia Association that is organising contest
SlovakPrix (the best multimedia products). She lectured at international conferences and universities abroad in
Denmark, Greece, Hong Kongu, Hungary, Germany, Poland, Austria, Spain, Sweden, USA and Great Britain. She is the member
of the Academy of Advertising (http://www.akademia.sk).
