We are seeing a new era when it comes to research. Historical news sources are being digitized but recent news is more problematic. Citizen journalists are dominating the „airwaves“ of social media while mainstream news outlets are also embracing social media. Journalists engage with news readership through blogs but some publications have disabled comments from readers. Plus, newspapers and news magazines are increasingly publishing in electronic form only. This increases the visibility and spread of information and allows for instantaneous corrections, but poses difficulties for historical preservation. The credibility of news reports becomes increasingly difficult to judge, given the proliferation of news channels, the potential „weaponization“ of news, the ability of people to spread misinformation and the reliability of reporting. Privacy concerns result in collisions between an individual's right to privacy and the public's right to know. How people identify relevant information now stems from social media recommendations. As technology changes and the ability to create and deliver information is in range of everybody, the crucial skills for information professionals will include critical thinking, media literacy, and new ways to promote content.
