Abstract

The Palacky University in Olomouc (UP) has an approach to 130 databases that collectively represent an important information tool for the academic staff members in both the research work and teaching activities. For many years, the statistical evaluation of the electronic information resources has been carried out manually on the basis of the administrative access of the producer. Considering the number of databases and the heterogeneity of the environments of provided data, the processing of analyses has been time-consuming and inflexible.

In 2011, UP won the FRVŠ project for application of the Serials Solutions 360 Counter, an online tool for processing and analysis of statistical data. The implementation of the tool has been carried out in cooperation with the Serials Solutions Client Center in two stages:

  1. parameter adjustment for UP and selection of required counter reports,
  2. data harvesting and uploading.

The Serials Solutions 360 Counter uploads data obtained from the producers or loads them automatically provided that the producer supports the SUSHI protocol. If the producer does not support this format, it is necessary to feed the data manually. The application of the 360 Counter provides UP with exact outputs that quantify the use of the electronic information resources according to various criteria. It is possible to generate a list of most often used periodicals, arrange the databases according to the number of login sessions or individual searches, or generate a list of most often used providers or platforms. It is also possible to export data into external applications or use various types of graphs.

In the long run, the 360 Counter will enable quality and prompt analysis of the information resources for an unlimited period, which will provide UP with valued supporting materials necessary for managerial decision making in this area.
