Abstract

National Medical Library develops and operates the Medvik portal (www.medvik.cz), which provides users with access to bibliographic databases and authority files maintained in the Medvik system (Medical Virtual Library). The major bibliographic databases managed by NML are catalog of Medvik libraries and Bibliographia medica Czechoslovaca, the authority files are Czech medical authorities (persons and corporations) and Medical Subject Headings thesaurus. Number of bibliographic and authority records approximates 900,000. The solution of the previous version of the portal was not optimal for fast and user-friendly search corresponding to expectations of users in the 21st century. It was therefore created a new solution that automatically integrates records from these databases into one common database and provides searching on all databases from one point of access. The portal offers users a range of features to enable quick and convenient access to information sources and provided follow-up services, including full text searching, faceted navigation and visualization of search results using the MeSH tag clouds. Online federative search service is available for registered NML users from 2011, which allows local and remote search in the selected licensed and freely available electronic resources.
