Abstract:
INTRODUCTION: Algorithms and guidelines are more and more accepted part of classic medicine. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Currently used medical selection languages, both thesauruses and higher forms – ontologies - are not very suitable for medical algorithms description. In their basic form they do not offer adequate possibilities for exact description of medical algorithms and data in individual medical domains, because they are not detailed enough even on the lowest level of hierarchy and the possibilities of expressing relationships among individual entities are limited. There is an alternative in the form of „modern“ ontologies, that differ mainly by their arrangement, specificity and use of relation concepts. RESULTS: We drew up a domain ontology for medical algorithms description, whose basis is a phenomenologic description of processed data as indicators and indicator transformations. A full semantic information must be available for all described concepts to allow our proposed system be evidence based and to connect knowledge across individual knowledge domains. The results were made available as an Open source software under LGPL licence (http://medigrid.sf.net). CONCLUSION: Presented domain ontology is usable in knowledge bases containing medical algorithms. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT. Supported by grant AV ČR no. 1ET202090537.
About author:
Adela Jarolimkova, in 1998 finished her master degree on Institute of Information Studies and Librarianship, Faculty of Philosophy and Arts, Charles University, this year she has concluded her doctoral degree with a dissertation thesis on the topic of information behaviour of physicians. Since 1998 she has worked in Scientific Medical Library of Institute for Clinical and Experimental Medicine, first as an information retrieval specialist, later as a head librarian. Currently she is on maternal leave and participates in the MediGrid project. She specializes in information retrieval systems, evidence based medicine, information literacy and information behaviour of physicians.
