Fulltext

Abstract:

The market with professional information resources underwent dramatic changes, side-effects of those can be felt still today. The unprecedented advances in IT affected nearly all industries, nevertheless their impact has been scarcely of the same impact like in the professional publishing industry. The journey from traditional scholarly book and journal publishing to a fully electronic process starting from editing all the way to online access to the final product lasted not more than 20 years. The customers of information products and services are experiencing similar fundamental changes and the information producers need to adapt to those changes, too. The paper will provide basic overview of the information marketplace challenges as well as it will illustrate these changes by new generation of products and services. In the second part of the speech the author will concentrate on the situation of the (academic) libraries in the Czech Republic and its comparison to the U.S. and West-European libraries.
